Learn to swim

Bora Open Water - December 2019

In 2019, the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation launched its first "Learn to Swim” programme in French Polynesia, in collaboration with the Fédération Tahitienne de Natation (Tahitian Swimming Federation / FTN).

The role of the FTN is to develop the practice of water sports, to implement "I learn to swim" actions and to facilitate the creation of local clubs such as the Bora Open Water club.

Last December, that club organized learning sessions on Matira beach (island of Bora Bora): observation of the environment, swimming lessons, initiation to water rescue, first aid and drowning prevention workshops.

Under the leadership of Mrs. Stéphanie Geyer Barneix, lifesaving world champion and record woman of the longest paddle board crossing, 119 children aged 6 to 12 were able to benefit from the courses. They were supervised by the lifesaving international champions Mrs. Emmanuelle Bescheron, Mr. Walter Geyer, Mrs. Alexandra Lux and the osteopath of the French lifesaving team Mr. Gauthier Philaire.

Mr. Gaston Tong Sang, Mayor of Bora Bora and President of the Assembly of French Polynesia welcomed the initiative and wishes for the project to be renewed in the future.
