Forum on Global Drowning Prevention – 02.05.2017

On May 2, 2017, the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation participated in the Forum on Global Drowning Prevention organized in New York by Bloomberg Philanthropies in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI).

This Forum was also intended to celebrate, in the presence of Dr Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General, the release of WHO’s report Preventing drowning: an implementation guide, following their 2014 Global report on drowning.

During panel discussions, experts in this field, such as UNICEF, RNLI, WHO and the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation, exchanged views on drowning prevention measures.

HSH Princess Charlene addressed a video message to the audience reminding her commitment to putting an end to drowning:

“I am delighted that so many of you are gathered today in order to raise awareness about drowning - one of the greatest silent killers on our planet. […]
Drowning claims a life every 85 seconds. Each life lost changes a family forever. But many of these deaths are avoidable. That’s why in 2012 I set up my Foundation to teach children essential water safety skills and how to swim. […]
Let’s all join forces and mobilise governments, NGOs and international bodies to end death by drowning. Together we will save lives, one person, one family, one community at a time.”
