Learn to swim

Madagascar - 01.10.2014 - 31.08.2015

From October 2014 to August 2015 the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation supported a programme in Tananarive and Antsirabe, Madagascar by purchasing swimming materials and equipment.  The number of children that know how to swim in these areas is very low due to the lack of swimming facilities.  Mantasoa, 60 km from Tananarive, also benefitted from this support.  The city has a lake where the drowning rate is much higher than it should be due to there being no learn to swim structure in place.

The same situation exists in Majunga (on the west coast), Tamatave (on the east coast) and Nosy Be (an island in the north west).

This initiative was run by the Triathlon Federation of Madagascar and put in place with the assistance of the Monegasque General Consul in Madagascar.

The directors of the Federation targeted the students at local schools through their gym teachers as well as triathlon clubs who wished to introduce swimming to newcomers or if their members wanted to perfect their sporting abilities.

Thanks to the Foundation providing this equipment, which will remain the property of these participating schools so they can continue this programme, approximately 500 children between the ages of 8 and 14 years learned to swim.
