Saint Devote Tournament – 31.03.2018

TSH Prince Albert and Princess Charlene, accompanied by Crown Prince Jacques and HSH Princess Gabriella, attended the 8th edition of the Saint Devote Tournament organised by the Monegasque Rugby Federation with the support of the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation, on Saturday 31st of March, at the Louis II Stadium in Monaco.

HSH Princess Charlene declared: “The Saint Devote Rugby Tournament continues to grow each year.

For the 2018 edition, we welcome 16 teams representing 13 nations.  I am happy to say once again that sport is a vehicle for exchanges, for surpassing oneself starting at a young age and for creating friendships across borders.

I wish all the participants a wonderful day, to be shared in the spirit of fair play.

I would also like to thank all the people who contribute their time and effort to this rugby tournament, which has turned into a true international event.”

The best striker in the French National Team’s history Frédéric Michalak – Patron of this 8th edition – and the South African World Champion JP Pietersen were also present.

The U12-category Tournament will bring together the following teams: France (Aix en Provence, Lucciana and Toulon), Georgia (Tbilissi), Greece (Athens), Italy (Imperia), Latvia (Mitava), Mauritius (Mauritian Federation Selection), Monaco, Russia (Kaliningrad), Scotland (Edinburgh), Spain (Barcelona), Switzerland (Geneva and Swiss French Selection), Tunisia (Jemmel), United Arab Emirates (Abu Dhabi).

Tunisia competed in the final against Scotland and won the Tournament.

The Saint Devote Trophy was awarded to Monaco’s team by HSH Princess Charlene.

A programme called "Tots Rugby" initiated children 3 to 5 years old to the sport, while “Rugby for Everyone” provided educational workshops and competitions adapted to children and young adults with disabilities. The day-long event successfully celebrated friendship and interaction.

In the pure Scottish tradition, the Edinburgh team was accompanied by a pipe which offered participants and spectators a good atmosphere and cheerfulness.

The purpose of this tournament is to highlight the values of rugby, dear to the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation, beyond its physical aspects. These meetings illustrate team spirit and the notions of generosity, sharing, solidarity and respect which help children accept themselves as they are in order to better integrate into society.

More than 350 children were gathered to celebrate rugby.
